Steve's Build: Not Just Another Barn!

Visiting Steve Wasseluk from SCW Custom Builders in Connecticut was an exciting event!

Opting to frame exclusively with connectors, he began with the modified Redding plan two years ago. Steve has created a custom multifunctional barn and event space that flawlessly blends rustic charm with contemporary design.

Steve’s hands-on approach involved milling the timber directly from his property, resulting in stunning 8” x 8” and 8” x 12” beams that give the space a robust, grounded feel. Steve used a variety of connectors, including 8” x 8”, 8” x 12” and 8” 3-ways.

Michael in Ontario: The Art of Shou Sugi Ban Staining

When Michael set out to accentuate his Douglas Fir beams and trim boards, he turned to the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. This method involves carefully charring the wood to enhance its durability against insects, fire and water, adding an extra layer of resilience to the hardy timber.

After the charring process, Michael applied coats of teak oil, a finishing touch that not only provides additional protection but brings out the rich, deep hues of the wood. The result? A captivating, multi-dimensional finish that adds an extra layer of sophistication to the final construction with Connext.

Larger Dimension Base Connections

This is an ideal solution for the issue of securing larger beams to base. This is a proven, engineered solution using an 8” x 10” connector recessed within a 10” x 10” x 1” HDPE riser or an 8” x 12” recessed in a 12” x 12” x 1” HDPE riser.
